Windows 11 Might Soon Warn You If Someone’s Snooping

Ever Get That Feeling Someone’s Watching You?

You’re working in a coffee shop or sitting on the train, and suddenly you get that weird feeling.
Like someone might be peeking at your screen.

It’s not just your imagination. Shoulder surfing is a real privacy concern, especially when you’re dealing with sensitive emails, confidential client info, or anything you’d prefer to keep private.

Microsoft is working on a feature that could help with exactly that.

Meet Onlooker Detection for Windows 11

A new privacy tool called Onlooker Detection has been spotted in development for Windows 11.

As the name suggests, it’s designed to let you know when someone nearby is trying to glance at your screen. If an onlooker is detected, your laptop could either dim the display to make it harder to see or send you a discreet warning. In some cases, it might do both.

This feature builds on existing technology in Windows called Presence Sensing. You might already be using it without realising. Presence Sensing can lock or dim your screen when you step away and wake it back up when you return. It’s often used with Windows Hello for fast and secure sign-ins.

With Onlooker Detection, Microsoft is taking things one step further, protecting your screen while you’re still in front of it.

What You’ll Need to Use It

Your device will need the right hardware for this to work. Specifically, it must have a presence sensor, technically known as Human Presence Detection (HPD).

This type of sensor is commonly found in newer laptops, especially those using chips from Qualcomm, AMD, or Intel. If you’re unsure whether your laptop has it, open the Settings app and check under System > Power & battery.

Is It Available Yet?

Microsoft hasn’t officially announced this feature, but it has appeared in recent Windows 11 preview builds. That means it’s being tested and refined behind the scenes.

While there’s no confirmed release date, it’s a strong signal that Microsoft is serious about building smarter, more subtle privacy tools directly into the operating system.

A Small Feature That Could Make a Big Difference

In a world where digital privacy matters more than ever, little features like this can have a big impact.

Whether you’re handling sensitive business data or just prefer to work without strangers reading over your shoulder, this could offer a welcome layer of protection, without you having to do anything.

Microsoft seems focused on making Windows 11 not just more powerful, but more personal and privacy-conscious too.

Would a feature like this give you more peace of mind when working in public?
