Chrome’s Incognito Mode Just Got More Private

The Problem With Old Incognito Mode

Most people know what Incognito mode in Chrome (or InPrivate mode in Microsoft Edge) is meant to do. It prevents your browser from saving:

  • Browsing history
  • Cookies and site data
  • Autofill and form entries

That makes it useful when booking flights, checking hotel prices, logging in to multiple accounts, or using a shared computer without leaving a trail.

But here’s the catch: Incognito mode wasn’t as private as many thought.

Until recently, anything you copied in an Incognito tab – whether it was text, an image, or a link – could still be stored in Windows clipboard history. Worse still, if you had Cloud Clipboard enabled, that copied information could sync across all your Windows devices.

Not exactly the privacy people expected.

Microsoft Steps In With a Fix

Microsoft quietly patched this gap. Now, when you copy something while using Incognito or InPrivate mode, Windows won’t save it to clipboard history or sync it to the cloud. This means your copied content disappears along with the rest of your Incognito session.

Google has since rolled this fix into Chrome updates, so everyone now benefits.

Extra Privacy for Media Playback

Another improvement affects media previews. Normally, when you play a YouTube video (or any media), Windows shows a title, thumbnail, or preview when you adjust the volume or check the media panel.

If you were in Incognito mode, this created an awkward contradiction – your browser was hiding your history, but your operating system was still displaying details of what you were watching.

Now, Windows simply shows: “A site is playing media”. No titles, no thumbnails, no details. This helps prevent accidental exposure if you’re watching something sensitive on a shared or public device.

What Incognito Mode Still Doesn’t Do

While these updates make Incognito mode more private, it’s important to remember what it does not protect against. Your activity is still visible to:

  • Your internet service provider
  • Your employer’s or organisation’s network administrators
  • The websites you visit

Incognito mode is about local privacy, not full anonymity.

What This Means for Businesses

For businesses across the Northern Beaches and North Shore, these changes are a positive step in protecting sensitive data. But they are not a substitute for proper cybersecurity practices.

If your staff are handling confidential information, you’ll want more than browser privacy. Stronger measures like endpoint protection, staff training, and data encryption are key.

Final Thoughts

Incognito mode is now more private than before, thanks to Microsoft and Google’s updates. But for businesses that need to protect sensitive data, it should only be one small piece of a much bigger security strategy.
