Microsoft Edge Could Soon Auto-Open Copilot
Microsoft’s Push to Make Copilot Part of Everyday Browsing
Microsoft has been leaning heavily into AI across its products, and the latest experiment is in its browser, Microsoft Edge. Currently, if you want to use Copilot in Edge, you have to click the sidebar icon. Simple enough.
But Microsoft is testing a feature where Copilot would auto-open in the sidebar whenever you launch Edge or open a new tab. That means AI is always there, ready to assist, without you lifting a finger.
For some users, this could be a welcome time-saver. For others, it may feel intrusive. Either way, it signals Microsoft’s intention to make Copilot a core part of the Edge experience.
What’s Being Tested in Edge
Alongside auto-open, Microsoft is also trialling:
- Ask Copilot in Settings – Instead of hunting through menus, you could simply ask Copilot how to change a setting.
- Scareware Blocker – An AI-driven feature that helps protect you from scam websites in real time.
These features are currently being tested in Edge Canary (the experimental version of Edge), and while not all experimental features make it to the final release, Microsoft’s strong AI push suggests these could stick.
How Businesses Could Benefit
For small businesses across the Northern Beaches and North Shore, Copilot inside Edge could deliver practical advantages:
- Faster troubleshooting – Instead of calling IT support for simple browser issues, your team could ask Copilot directly.
- Productivity boost – Copilot can summarise articles, brainstorm emails, or draft quick messages while employees stay focused on core work.
- Built-in protection – Features like Scareware Blocker provide another layer of security, helping safeguard your business from malicious websites.
The Privacy Question
Of course, auto-opening Copilot also raises questions. Will it always be listening? Will you be able to turn it off? Microsoft hasn’t released details yet, but it’s likely there will be options to customise the experience.
Should You Use Copilot in Edge?
If these features roll out, Copilot could become a permanent fixture in Edge. For businesses that want to streamline tasks, reduce wasted time, and strengthen security, this could be a positive step. For those who prefer a leaner browsing experience, it may feel unnecessary.
